5 Inexpensive Things to Do in Savannah

Our budgets may all be a little tight now-a-ways but that shouldn't mean we can't get out and enjoy some free time every once in a while!  Here's our list of 5 ways to have fun with your family in Savannah without breaking the bank:



1.          Oatland Island Wildlife Center - Tucked away off of Island Expressway, Oatland is a perfect family outing that costs just a few dollars per person!  Dedicated to preserving local wildlife as well as teaching the next generation about Georgia's natural habitats, Oatland features a variety of indigenous wildlife.  Wolves, cougars, owls, foxes and more are found along Oatland's winding nature trails that take you through the trees, the plains and the marshland to see each animal in their habitat.   Cool off inside and check out their gift shop with proceeds going towards keeping the animals fed! Admission:  $5 for adults, $3 for kids 4-18, seniors, students and active military, kids under 4 free. 

2.        Parks:

Forsyth Park in downtown Savannah recently put in a new indoor cafĂ© with clean bathrooms.  They also have walking paths, children’s play area, large fountain, tennis/basketball courts, and scheduled concerts in the amphitheater. 

Lake Mayer, located on Montgomery Crossroads just off of the Truman Parkway, offers tennis courts, basketball courts, jogging/bicycle path, fishing in a freshwater lake, baseball field, hockey rink, playground, and dog exercise park.
  
Daffin Park:  Come cheer on Savannah’s Minor league baseball team the Sand Gnats! Tickets start at $7 for general admission.  





3.          Savannah Belles Ferry - Enjoy a two minute ride with a view of Historic Savannah’s riverfront.  This free shuttle service goes from the Waving Girl Landing at Marriott Riverfront park to Hutchinson Island (Savannah International Trade and Convention Center).   

4.          Bonaventure CemeteryDeveloped on the historical site of Bonaventure Plantation, Bonaventure Cemetery rests on a scenic bluff off on the Wilmington River, east of Savannah.  Its old tree-lined roadways, notable persons interred and unique cemetery sculpture and architecture have been bringing people to the site for over 150 years.  It is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres.  

5.          Museums - There are a variety of museums in Savannah that have unique collections and visitor experiences:

The Roundhouse Railroad Museum, believed to be the most complete and largest Antebellum railroad repair facility still in existence offers scheduled activities such as train rides, car tours, and children’s activities in the Baggage Car.  Admission is $10 for adults, $4 for children 6 and under and kids under 1 year are free!

Old Fort Jackson:  The oldest standing brick fortification in Georgia, Old Fort Jackson is one of only eight Second System fortifications built before the War of 1812 still standing in the US.  Experience military exhibits  and cannon firing demonstrations all with a great view of the Savannah River.  Admission is $6 for adults, kids under 6 are free.

Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum:  This dramatic 90,000 sq ft museum complex houses the best elements honoring the 8th Air Force which helped defeat the Nazis during WWII.  Admission is $10 for adults and $6 for kids

"Catch the Current" Preview Party at WaterWays Township

Last Saturday was the “Catch the Current” Preview Party held at WaterWays Township, one of Richmond Hill’s newest and most anticipated planned communities.  The event was a huge success and Synergy Designer Homes was proud to be a part of it.

Boasting 6 ½ miles marsh frontage, lakes, 1000 acres ancient oak hammocks, and 3 ½ miles of lagoons WaterWays is a unique waterfront living experience and the Preview Party effectively showcased its serene beauty!

Nearly 500 visitors attended the “Catch the Current” event according to the event organizers.  Some of the various activities that they participated in were:


  • WaterWays’ featured builders, including Synergy Homes,  previewed their showcase homes and were an overwhelming success.

  • Historic lectures provided by local historians and archeologists about the Native American and Civil War influences on the land.

  • The Grand Opening of WaterClub West, WaterWays’ saltwater swimming complex.

  • Local Girl Scouts served snow cones and lemonade in the screened pavilion.

Visitors also were able to experience some of the other community amenities such as pontoon boat rides, kayaking and fishing on the Grand Lagoon.

7.  “Celebration of Our Independence”:  The Savannah Winds, Armstrong’s community wind symphony, presents their annual patriotic concert featuring the music of John Phillip Sousa, Irving Berlin, Lee Greenwood.   There will be narration by senior military officers, and WTOC’s Bill Cathcart will be this year’s Master of Ceremonies.  Our nation’s colors will be presented by the US Army 3rd ID honor guard plus recognition of the Chatham County Veteran of Year.  At AASU, Sunday July 3rd from 3-5pm, $12 advanced general admission, $10 advanced senior, students, children and military.  For more info call 912-344-2556.

2.  Savannah may be best known for our Historic Downtown.  The Great American Weekend on River Street features a wide variety of artisans selling unique works of art that range from simple crafts to fine art. Munch on Savannah Popcorn's kettle corn and keep cool with Repicci's Italian ices.  And when you're ready to eat, there are plenty of tasty restaurants to choose from along River Street. Best Time to Buy New!

There's good news on the horizon for the housing market according to an article by Fortune Magazine; Real estate:  It's time to buy again.   Mike Castleman, founder and CEO of Metrostudy, the nation's leading provider of housing marketing information, has been analyzing data on the country's new home inventory for over thirty years.

From what he has seen from the information Metrostudy has gathered on the current new home inventory, Castleman believes that there is a significant shortage of new homes around the country and this shortage will lead to an increase of new home prices, a complete 180 from the new home surplus that contributed to lower prices just a few years ago.

In their article, Fortune magazine recognizes that there is a lot of conflicting information out there about where the housing market is headed but offers their advice about determining the true path of real estate in this country. 

The article cites two basic factors that are now creating the foundation for a residential real estate turnaround:  the first being the unprecedented decline of new construction and the second is a dramatic drop in prices.  The reason behind this factors, Fortune states, is the "astonishing flight from the traditional American approach of buying new houses to an embrace of renting."  In roughly half of the major real estate markets paying a mortgage on a house is cheaper than renting one.

Moody Analytics' chief economist Mark Zandy is quoted in the article saying that he expects prices in "virtually all" markets where homes prices went up less than in other "bubble" areas to rise faster than inflation to align with rent prices as apartments are in short supply.

In the true disaster areas for housing, Sunbelt cities such as Miami, Phoenix and Las Vegas, are seeing their markets recover slowly but surely.  Foreclosures are attracting investors big and small and while available new homes are few, they are slowly growing.

Each real estate market is different, but over all, the decrease of available new homes, more people opting to rent rather than buy plus an overall decline in housing prices makes new homeownership a worthy investment.  In the future, Castleman predicts, supplies will get tight due to demand and that will lead to a rise in prices.  What does this mean for the potential homebuyer?  Buy now before demand brings prices back up!  To read the complete article click here.

See Spot Run - Bryan Animal Caregivers 6th Annual 5k Walk

Synergy Designer Homes and Weichert, REALTORS® - Pursuit Real Estate Group are teaming up this spring to be sponsors for the Bryan County Animal Caregivers 6th annual “See Spot Run” 5k run/walk at J.F. Gregory park in Richmond Hill, GA on Saturday, March 5th 2011. 


The Bryan Animal Caregivers are a non-profit organization that offer reduced cost spay and neuter programs to help pet owners get their animal spayed or neutered as well as feral or stray animals.

Bryan Animal Caregivers also help people find homes for an unwanted pet by offering affordable adoption opportunities through Petfinder.com and Petsmart.  While not a shelter, they do have foster homes available and rescue shelter animals that are scheduled to be euthanized.

            To the Owners and Management of Synergy Designer Homes,

Bryan Animal Caregivers would like to thank you again for your continued support through the years and more specifically for being one of the largest Sponsors yet again this year for our See Spot Run 5K Run/Walk being held at JF Gregory Park in Richmond Hill on March 5, 2011.  It is because of the generous support of contributors like you BAC is able to continue in its mission to reduce the number of unwanted pets through our reduced cost spay/neuter program.

Leashed and vaccinated dogs are welcome at the park, but participants without a dog are welcome, too!  The run begins at 9am and afterwards several awards will be presented as well as a raffle drawing.  Spring seems to have come early to Savannah, so the weather should be perfect for the walk!

Thank you to Synergy for three years of continued sponsorship.  Your support of one of the only animal welfare organizations in Bryan County is an invaluable resource to the community you are in.

Featured Floor Plans at The Preserve
